Speaking in English for Business

Lesson 1

Main Aim – You will know what to say when there is a communication problem in a meeting.

First we have an introduction to the course through a team reading race and you’ll get a chance to meet your classmates.

We’ll look at what makes a good communicator and learn some key vocabulary.

We’ll also look at two examples of why and how people don’t communicate well, look at ways to solve these problems, and get some practice. This will be useful in your first speaking test in lesson 6.

If there’s enough time, you’ll also get a chance to have a practice meeting.

Lesson 2

Main Aim – You will know a variety of ways to offer and respond to opinions in a meeting.

First you’ll have a discussion about successful brands and learn some key vocabulary.

We’ll look at an example meeting to see how people exchange opinions and you’ll have a practice meeting.

We’ll look at using stress to change meaning and you’ll get some practice of this and have a meeting about a brand in trouble.

Lesson 3

Main Aim – You will know what to say to politely control a meeting and clarify ideas.

First we’ll have a discussion about how to get a job and then you’ll learn some vocabulary describing people, with a pronunciation focus on word stress.

After that, you’ll listen to a meeting to learn some polite ways to control a meeting, and then you’ll practise these skills in a meeting.

After that, we’ll look at ideas about change and listen to a meeting about making changes at work. From this, you’ll learn useful language to ask for and give clarification in a meeting.

Finally, you’ll have another meeting about the government making changes.

Lesson 4

Main Aim – You will know what to say to improve the way you offer and discuss ideas in a meeting.

First you’ll discuss some examples of doing bad things with your partner and learn some key words about bad behaviour.

Then we’ll listen to a meeting about solving a bad behaviour problem at work, and look at the language used to talk about the good and bad sides of an idea.

Finally, you’ll get some practice of problem solving through role play.

Lesson 5

Main Aim – You will know what is expected in your exam and how to get the best grade you can.

We’ll revise the language from previous lessons and look at the way this connects to how your graded.

We’ll look at some example exam conversations and common mistakes.

You’ll get a chance to prepare and practice two old exams, and you’ll receive your exam paper so you can prepare.

Lesson 7

Main Aim – You will know how to start and end your presentations to give a clear structure to your audience.

Lesson 8

Main Aim – You will know how to get your audience’s attention and develop your skills.

The materials are on pages 19-28 of your second coursebook.

Lesson 9

Main Aim – You will know how to use visual aids to support your message.

The materials are on pages 29-36 of your second coursebook. There will be some additional materials, which you can find on the SEB materials page.

Lesson 10

Main Aim – You will know how to use techniques to keep your audience’s attention and strengthen your presentation.

Lesson 11

This lesson is a workshop period so you have time to improve and practise your assessed presentation. We will also look at handling questions after a presentation.
